UPDATE FROM THE COUNTY OF MARIN ON ALTO TUNNEL INVESTIGATION STUDY AND COST ESTIMATE UPDATE
AND NOTICE OF COMMUNITY MEETING ON WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 27, 2017
Dear Community Members,
The draft Alto Tunnel Investigation Study and Cost Estimate Update has been posted to the website.
You can read the news release for more information on the study. The purpose of the study was to supply updated information for further public discussion. The report concluded that it would cost about $46.8 million to reconstruct the tunnel (portal to portal) as a multiuse pathway or $8.5 million to permanently seal and abandon it. Factoring for inflation, the cost options for the tunnel are close to those estimated in the 2010 Mill Valley/Corte Madera Corridor Study. Marin County Department of Public Works (DPW) is more informed about the methods required to reconstruct the tunnel, that allows for an industry-accepted lower construction cost contingency (20%). A third option would be to leave the tunnel as it stands.
Join us for a public meeting on September 27, 2017 from 6:30-8:30p at the Corte Madera Community Center, 498 Tamalpais Drive for a detailed presentation from staff and the consultant team to see photos, scans and ask questions and provide comments about the investigation and cost estimate updates.
NOTE: This meeting is NOT about whether or not to move forward with construction of a pathway or to fill the remaining tunnel voids. It is an informational meeting about the existing tunnel condition, and cost estimate updates for pathway or closure options for informational purposes only. No decisions have been made, nor will be made at this meeting. This is a meeting to present information for future consideration.
If you have any questions about the study, please don’t hesitate to contact me, or send your thoughts and input by email to include in the public record regarding this project by October 11, 2017.
